Utah State Racquetball Makes a Name for Itself

The Utah State Racquetball team has come a long way since its beginnings three years ago. Doug Holt, the team’s coach, organized the team in 2006 after being the only person to represent Utah State in the national competition the year before. This year the team has 16 members, 12 of which will represent Utah State in the National Competition held in Springfield, Missouri this April.

Last year, Utah State was ranked tenth out of the division one schools. Club President Mike Balaskey said that the outlook for the upcoming season is “pretty good, we hope to make the top ten again or move up.” They lost three players from their men’s team and only one from the women’s but they are well into the rebuilding stages. During practices held twice per week, they focus on technique and form and hold scrimmages.

The racquetball team shows their dedication by practicing and traveling to tournaments, all without scholarships or funding to pay for their expenses. Since the Racquetball team is a club sport, the team does their own fundraising to help pay for uniforms, equipment, and travel expenses, and then the University matches a portion of the money raised.

It is amazing what Holt has done for the team, just three years ago, one of his goals was to have three men and three women at nationals so they could “make a name for Utah State.” Now the racquetball team is nationally ranked and Holt is coaching for the first time rather than playing. According to Balaskey, “Doug sacrifices his time and a lot of our success comes from that. We work a lot harder as a team and a lot of growing comes from the responsibility put on our shoulders.”

The racquetball team usually participates in one competition per month. They mainly compete in Orem, Ogden, and the Salt Lake City area. The Utah State Aggie Open will be held October 16-17^th and is the only home tournament this year. As a fundraiser, they will be having a USU student/faculty tournament in the beginning of November. Open to all skill levels, this is a great chance for anyone interested to come out and have a great time playing racquetball.

Katie Christiansen, who is a returning player for the women’s team says that “racquetball gives me a break from everyday life. It is a great work out and it is fun!” One reason that she enjoys playing is because if you work at it you can get better.

In the fast paced game of racquetball, having fun is what keeps these players going. The Utah State Racquetball team is improving with each year and is living up to the original goals of the team. Ward Cuff, who was the Vice President three years ago said, “I want people to say, ‘Hey, Utah State’s got a team, and they play pretty good.’” If anyone has doubts about the exceptional abilities of the racquetball team, all they need to do is look at how far the team has come and they will realize that racquetball is at USU to stay.

I just wanted to take the time and let you know how much I enjoyed my recent visit to your Logan, Utah restaurant. This was my first visit to any Texas Roadhouse restaurant, and I just wanted to compliment you on a job well done.

It was the grand opening weekend and I did call ahead seating so that the wait wouldn’t be as long. When I arrived with my husband, we were taken care of right when we walked in the door. We were seated promptly and our waitress took care of us just like we were family. The food was amazing and I really liked the atmosphere and feeling of your restaurant. It made me happy to see the workers having fun and loving their job.

I also read on the news that the Logan location is donating all their profits to the Andy’s Outreach charity program. I just want to thank you again for supporting such a good cause for people in need. I am looking forward to my next Texas Roadhouse experience.

Response to 'United Breaks Guitars'

For those who aren’t familiar with “United Breaks Guitars,” I just want to quickly summarize what happened. In 2008, a musician named Dave Carroll was traveling from Halifax to Nebraska for a tour. While sitting on the plane in Chicago, people witnessed his guitar being thrown around by the baggage handlers. Carroll immediately filed several complaints upon finding out that his $3500 guitar was broken. For several months Carroll perused the issue, only to be given the run around without any promise of compensation for his loss. Carroll promised United Airlines that he would be writing three different songs to tell airline passengers about his experience.

The two videos released so far have become quick online sensations. I watched both videos on YouTube and after reading more articles on the situation, I’ve come to the conclusion that United Airlines should have taken care of the situation in the beginning and not let it get out of hand. If a customer puts up a fight for nine months, the airline should give in to the customer and pay the small amount to fix his guitar. According to Dave Carroll, “At that moment it occurred to me that I had been fighting a losing battle all this time and that fighting over this at all was a waste of time.”

United Airline’s customer service and public relations policy needs a makeover. They don’t seem to have an exact plan for handling this type of situation. It would be better if they had a hierarchy or some sort of chain of command for handling customer complaints. Instead of being passed up from the first contact, Carroll’s problem was passed from person to person and even completely ignored by others.

United Airlines put themselves into a bad position by not taking control of the situation. They had nine months to correct their mistake and/or pay for the guitar repairs. Chris Ayres of The Times Online estimated United Airlines lost revenue at around $180 million dollars. He said “the gathering thunderclouds of bad PR caused United Airlines’ stock price to suffer a mid-flight stall, and it plunged by 10 per cent, costing shareholders $180 million.” It is crazy to think that a YouTube video can spread around the internet in such a short amount of time.

After the video was posted online, the story spread like wildfire with the help of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. United Airlines clearly underestimated the power of social media and its ability to influence their customers. I think that this situation could have happened to any airline company, it just so happened that United took the first hit.

The new companies of today need to be able to adjust their public relations strategies based on the social media available. Fifteen years ago, this story wouldn’t have spread nearly as far or as fast, but with social media being available to everyone all over the world, normal people like Dave Carroll can drastically affect large corporations. I tried to find a statement by United Airlines about Carroll’s broken guitar, but nothing was available.

United has now had over a year and a half to respond to the situation, but the fact that information about it is not readily available tells us that they have made a big mistake. Even if we don’t have the exact numbers to see how it affected them to date, people are going to be talking about this for years to come. Now that I realize what really happened, it makes me want to fly with a different company with the hopes that they will take better care of their customers.

I am sure that this is United’s worst PR move in their history. I think that it has taught them a vital lesson about customer service and the handling of complaints. Although United is the perfect example of bad PR, there are plenty of other airlines that have problems of their own. Carroll recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak about airline passenger rights. Hopefully all of the major airlines will take something from this incident and make the appropriate changes to their policies so incidents like this stop happening in the future.

Dear Cousin,

I am writing this letter in order to explain to you what my major (public relations) is. Someone who practices public relations is like a messenger between a company or an organization and the media. Public relations is also known to many as PR. It is the job of public relations to make the company or organization look good to the public (or the intended audience.)

There are many types of public relations jobs, but they all revolve around communications. Most public relations jobs involve promoting certain products, people, services, and ideas. It can also be between an employer and their employees. PR can also involve getting the word out or advertising ideas by using media outlets and press releases.

The main point of public relations is to communicate an idea between two parties. Although many public relations specialists have different definitions, our textbook (Public Relations Writing, Newsom & Haynes)has a good definition, "Public relations practice is the art and science of analyzing trends, predicting their consequences, counseling organization leaders and implementing planned programs of action which will serve both the organization's and the public interest." Well Cousin, I hope that this explains Public Relations for you and now you will have a better idea of what I plan to do with my life.

Practice News Story 11: Accident

TREMONTON, Utah- A Utah State University van rolled on Interstate 84, west of Tremonton on Wednesday afternoon. Ten USU students and one instructor were involved. High speed and vehicle malfunction probably contributed to the crash. Four survivors were transported to nearby hospitals.

The group was on their way home from an Agricultural Systems Department field trip to kick off Ag Week. Evan Parker was the driver of the vehicle that crashed. Kyle Holden manages the farm implement store that the group had just visited and was driving next to the van at the time of the accident.

Holden reported that the tire blew and the vehicle was simply too big for Parker to gain control. The vehicle rolled, and bodies flew into the air. “I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life,” Holden said. Jennie Smith and Holden witnessed the accident. Smith helped the emergency people by doing anything they told her.

Police Lieutenant Ed Michaud was the first law enforcement officer on the scene with his partner Jason Jensen. “It appears that a van filled with young men mostly in their 20’s lost control and rolled off the interstate … and it looks like no one was wearing seatbelts,” said Michaud. Seven people are confirmed dead.

Guy Westoff, the Supervisor of USU motor vehicles told us that the vehicle would not have been on a trip if it hadn’t of passed the inspection. “It was a tragedy for our institution,” said USU President, Stan Albrecht.

The Gates, Turner and African Officials To Help Save Africa

AFRICA -Bill and Melinda Gates and Ted Turner were witnessed getting off a private jet together on March 21, 2007. I followed them to find out that they were meeting with several African officials that afternoon to discuss creating an organization or institution to help with the health problems in Africa. The World Health Organization also has plans to be actively involved in this endeavor with the assistance and support of Director General Margaret Chan.

When asked if he was buying Africa, Bill Gates replied, “Yeah, I guess some people think that is my goal in life.” I discovered that his goal is something much better than buying Africa, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Ted Turner want to educate people throughout Africa about diseases such as HIV. Turner is involved in the United Nations and with his help there is more that can be done than just eradicating the diseases. By educating them their lives can be spared, rather than simply prolonged. African Mayor Melik Ok said, “My people don’t need fish, they need to learn how to fish.”

During the meeting, they talked about the opportunities that exist between the Gates, Turner, and the African people. Ok told me that his government has a little bit of money that they can use to help, but the main thing that they need is help them get this project started, after which they can take it over. This was not the first of these meetings, nor will it be the last. There is no official deal yet.

In 2008, Bill Gates will no longer be working with Microsoft, rather he plans on spending much of his time working on his organization. Warren Buffett announced in June 2006 that he would be leaving approximately $30 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His financial help will be a big part of this operation. The Gates plan to get local perspectives on what needs to be done and then take it to a larger organization such as the WHO. “I think the generosity of philanthropists in the world … is facilitating the programs we have; and their generosity, ambition, and goals really makes my organization effective and worthwhile,” said Chan.

Jazz Control Clippers in Staples Center

LOS ANGELES- For the Utah Jazz, Friday night's game proved to be a decisive turning point in the Jazz's season. The Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 106-99. Some of the younger players rose to the top and helped Carlos Boozer and Derek Fisher lead the team to a victory. This is the Jazz's second straight win, coming from a four game loosing streak.

The Clippers led the Jazz 22-13 in the first quarter, and continued their momentum throughout the second quarter leading the Jazz 24-20. Going into halftime was like a whole new game for the Jazz. They came back in the third quarter to lead the Clippers by 10. In the fourth quarter, it was a close match-up, going into the final minutes, it was tied at 97. Mehmet Okur sank a three pointer to seal the deal for the Jazz.

Fisher, who has been playing professional basketball longer than anyone on the team said, “It was fun to have the energy we had tonight, we just came in with a lot of energy but so did they, so it was a great win.” Fisher had 12 points, 15 assists and two steals. Many of the young players rose to the occasion. C.J. Miles and Paul Millsap had great games. Millsap had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan said that “it has been great to see this organization rebuild.”

Elton Brand, high scorer for the Clippers scored 33 points. “Every loss is hard ... some nights I’m not at my best, other nights some others aren't at their best, we just have to step up,” said Brand. Brand shot a three pointer during the last 15 seconds, but missed and the Clippers lost the close game to the Jazz.

It is no doubt that the fans had as much to do with this win as did the players. “It was a great community, Salt Lake loves basketball … we have great fans come out to the games each night some even come out to LA,” said Millsap.

“We always plan to be going to the playoffs…for our fans, the team, our organization,” said Sloan. Marty Burns of Sports Illustrated mentioned that he thought Sloan had the Coach of the Year award wrapped up. It is true that Sloan has turned this team around, he has far surpassed some of the expectations from the beginning of the season. Burns said, “sure they have a chance, [at the Championship] but I just think that it will be tough for them to get past some of the powerhouses in the west.”

Google Bids $50 Billion on Time Warner

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Google Inc. (GOOG) formerly delivered a hostile takeover bid to Time Warner Inc. (TWX) today. The bid of $50 billion dollars was received by Richard D. Parsons, CEO of Time Warner. It is unknown at this time whether Parsons and his committee will accept the bid or not. The FCC is in the process of doing some preliminary investigations in order to stop a monopoly from forming if in fact Time Warner decides to accept the bid.

Parsons reported that they had not yet made the decision on whether or not to sell the company, but they are taking this bid very seriously. The board should be sitting down soon to calculate and see what amount they think Time Warner is worth. Time Warner has 30 days to decide what its decision is, and Parsons said that they would have an answer by then.

Google has been looking at expanding their company for some time. They recently purchased You Tube for $1.65 billion in stock. The major conglomerates are expanding and the race to buy major companies has begun. Eric Schmidt, CEO and Chairman of Google said that “to merge that user base, I think would be beneficial to both the producer and consumer.”

Schmidt mentioned that the bid was rounded up and it was placed for more money than they thought Time Warner was actually worth. Google apparently offered Time Warner $35 billion in stock, $10 billion in cash and $5 billion in debt. Schmidt said, “ I think that this is an opportune time to take advantage of the two companies … I think that it is long overdue.”

It is rumored that Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) and Microsoft Inc. (MSFT) are also in the expanding and merging business. Microsoft was apparently talking to Time Warner about purchasing AOL. Chair of the Board at Microsoft, William (Bill) Gates said that “it is more streamlined to have everything under one roof.” It is unknown as to whether the FCC will actually step in to prevent a monopoly, or whether they are just to busy to care.

President Lincoln Gives Speech at Gettysburg Dedication

President Abraham Lincoln addressed 15,000 people in the afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1863. He spoke at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Lincoln gave a short speech about human equality. His 3-minute speech followed Edward Everett’s 2-hour speech.

Lincoln started with “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” His voice stressed the importance that all men are created equal. Lincoln then went on to talk about how we are now engaged in a civil war. The purpose of his speech was to dedicate the cemetery in the same place where four and a half months ago the Battle of Gettysburg took place and claimed 15,000 lives.

In the last part of his speech, Lincoln made it cleat that we need to “take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain.” It was very clear that this speech was given for our nation so that we would not perish, but join together in freedom and finish the war.

In remarks about his speech, Lincoln said, “I felt inspired actually… the words that I chose did not come easily… I felt guided writing them.” According to our President, this speech only took two hours to write.
The feeling surrounding Gettysburg on Wednesday afternoon was a very somber one.

Lincoln mentioned that we had been successful in the war effort and that several amendments to the constitution were needed to reshape this country. Lincoln also said that we would need years of recovery to raise up the war torn and that the only way to accomplish that would be to extend a helping hand to those in need. Lincoln’s speech will have a lasting effect for years to come so “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom”

Michael Jackson, Pop Star, Dies in a 'Thriller'

LOS ANGELES- Michael Joseph Jackson, 48, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 11:37 a.m. At the time of his death, Jackson was undergoing breast augmentation surgery at UCLA Medical Center. Michael’s death is most likely due to anesthesia complications.

He was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary Indiana to Joseph and Katherine Jackson. Michael is the seventh of nine children. He married Lisa Marie Presley in 1994, but later divorced two years later. In 1996, Michael married Deborah Jeanne Rowe. They had two children together, Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr. (also known as "Prince"), and Paris Katherine Jackson. Michael and Deborah got divorced in 1999. Michael also claims to have another son by a surrogate mother, Michael Joseph Jackson III, who was apparently born around February 2002.

Michael is a former Jehovah’s Witness. He attended high school at Montclair Prep in Van Nuys, California. Michael lived with his children at Neverland Ranch. He was involved in many children’s organizations, and was know for his love of all children.

Michael got started in his career at the early age of five, when he sang with his brothers in a group called the Jackson Five. Later he went solo, selling over 170 million albums worldwide. Michael was a great singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, choreographer, and dancer. He is known to some as the ‘King of Pop.’

Michael is survived by his ex-wives Debbie Rowe and Lisa Marie Presley, also by his parents Katherine and Joe Jackson and all of his siblings, Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy and Janet. Michael will also be missed by fans everywhere!

Two Suspects Apprehended In LDS Church Break In

LOGAN, Utah- Two suspects in the LDS Church break in case were arrested Saturday February 2. A preliminary hearing was held with the Judge this morning.

Jim Michaels, age 35, and a minor, who is not being named at this time, were taken into custody by Sheriff Deputy Jeffery Hasty. Hasty apprehended them at the residence of Michaels.

The Prosecutor in this case is District Attorney Noel Mayfield. She stated that they are being charged with a misdemeanor of breaking and entering, misdemeanor of vandalism, and a felony of burglary. Attorney Mayfield says that Michaels has fingerprint evidence, and a past criminal history against him.

The minor has not been charged at this time, however, Michaels could be charged with anywhere from six months to one year in jail, and up to a 5,000 dollar fine.

Defense Attorney Robbie Cochran said that, “My client is going to be pleading not guilty.” The next court date is set for March 21st at The First Superior Court of Cache County. “We will show that my client is not guilty to the crimes to which he has been charged.”

A Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church building was broken into early Wednesday, January 31, 2007. According to Sheriff Deputy Geoffrey Hasty, the burglars were probably juveniles. There were two CPUs taken from LDS church Bishop Lawrence “Larry” Shirk’s office. Two computer monitors were also found smashed in the hallway.

Evelyn Breathwaite, who lives across the street said that she “heard banging, and like glass breaking” early Wednesday morning.

The maintenance manager of five buildings in the area, Robert Knotz, was the one who discovered the vandalism. Knotz went to the building at six o’clock a.m. Wednesday, and immediately saw the damaged monitors.

Bishop Shirk was in the building Tuesday night conducting interviews with his ward members, something that he does regularly. Shirk reported that he “opened up window to listen to the rain” and he apparently forgot to close it. The vandals came in through that window. The CPUs carried no confidential information; he just used them for personal information. Bishop Shirk said that they are valued at around 600 dollars total, while the monitors were about 50 dollars each.

Bishop Shirk said that it appears the two or more vandals were simple trying to have fun and goof off. The police are still investigating this situation.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, a fire broke out in a Mexican restaurant called Pedro's on the corner of Washington Blvd. and 21st Street. The fire destroyed the inside of the restaurant. The fire did not affect any surrounding buildings, however the two apartments in the upper level of the building were damaged by smoke.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze. Mercedes and Maria del Mar, ages four and two, and their father, Miguel Sanchez, were in the upper apartment where they live at the time of the fire. They were rescued through a window by fireman Greg Chamberlain. "It wasn't really that big of a fire,” Chamberlain stated.

The Sanchez's were taken to Ogden Regional hospital with only minor injuries due to smoke inhalation. Medical Team Leader, Captain Rick Thompson gave the girls and their father oxygen after they were rescued and said that they seemed to be fine. Restaurant owner and cook, Pedro Sanchez, also sustained some burns to his hands, but was not seriously hurt.

Michael Freeman, age 16, was just finishing his lunch at Pedro's restaurant at the time of the fire. "I just saw smoke and heard him [Pedro] yelling and got out." The fire apparently started by some grease on the stove in the kitchen. "I tried to get the extinguisher, but I couldn't," said Pedro Sanchez. Sanchez did not want to comment on the approximate value of his restaurant, but stated that he has owned it for two years and he plans on rebuilding what what damaged in the fire and staying in Ogden.

Yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m., a Dodge van carrying about 10 Utah State University students rolled on Interstate 84, just West of Tremonton.
They were on their way home from an Agricultural Systems Department field trip.

Kyle Holden, who is the manager at a farm implement store was driving his truck along side the van. Holden said that Professor Parker was the one driving the van. They weren’t going faster than 80 MPH, because Holden passed them going 80 MPH.

People in the van have not been named yet. Robbie Peterson was one of them, he was taken to a hospital in Ogden, 3 others were taken by life flight, and one was taken in an ambulance. Survivors are being flown to neighboring hospitals.

Police Lieutenant Ed Michaund was the first law enforcement officer on the scene. He said, “It’s one of the worst things I’ve had to witness.” Kyle Holden and Jennie Smith were the only witnesses. They tried to help as much as they could, but everyone was in bad shape. Jennie recalled seeing a big dust cloud after they went off the road. She was the one to call 911.

Well, this is my first blog, or should I say my first real blog. I actually wrote a blog once on 'myspace' before deleting my 'myspace' account. This is mostly just a test to see if this whole blog thing works. So I will tell you a little about me. I am Cassandra Bryan, I was born in Antioch, California. I have lived in Washington, Idaho, and Utah, but when asked, I say I am from Tooele, Utah. I have two sisters, one brother, a mom and a dad. I like the TV show 24 which airs every Monday night at eight on Fox. It is one of the coolest things ever, but so is chocolate! I guess that is all for now, hopefully this thing works!
