A Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church building was broken into early Wednesday, January 31, 2007. According to Sheriff Deputy Geoffrey Hasty, the burglars were probably juveniles. There were two CPUs taken from LDS church Bishop Lawrence “Larry” Shirk’s office. Two computer monitors were also found smashed in the hallway.
Evelyn Breathwaite, who lives across the street said that she “heard banging, and like glass breaking” early Wednesday morning.
The maintenance manager of five buildings in the area, Robert Knotz, was the one who discovered the vandalism. Knotz went to the building at six o’clock a.m. Wednesday, and immediately saw the damaged monitors.
Bishop Shirk was in the building Tuesday night conducting interviews with his ward members, something that he does regularly. Shirk reported that he “opened up window to listen to the rain” and he apparently forgot to close it. The vandals came in through that window. The CPUs carried no confidential information; he just used them for personal information. Bishop Shirk said that they are valued at around 600 dollars total, while the monitors were about 50 dollars each.
Bishop Shirk said that it appears the two or more vandals were simple trying to have fun and goof off. The police are still investigating this situation.
