LOGAN, Utah- Those people interested in Social Media have a new club in Cache Valley. The Social Media Club, headquartered in San Francisco, started a new Cache Valley chapter in July 2009. According to their president, the goal of their organization is to “help inform people of social media and network with other likeminded individuals.” The group holds meetings every 2nd Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Guest speakers and panels are invited to speak at different locations around the valley based on available space. The SMCCV is not just for students and faculty of the university, but for anyone who wants to learn more about social media.

Letter to Cousin
Dear Cousin,
I am writing this letter in order to explain to you what my major (public relations) is. Someone who practices public relations is like a messenger between a company or an organization and the media. Public relations is also known to many as PR. It is the job of public relations to make the company or organization look good to the public (or the intended audience.)
There are many types of public relations jobs, but they all revolve around communications. Most public relations jobs involve promoting certain products, people, services, and ideas. It can also be between an employer and their employees. PR can also involve getting the word out or advertising ideas by using media outlets and press releases.
The main point of public relations is to communicate an idea between two parties. Although many public relations specialists have different definitions, our textbook (Public Relations Writing, Newsom & Haynes)has a good definition, "Public relations practice is the art and science of analyzing trends, predicting their consequences, counseling organization leaders and implementing planned programs of action which will serve both the organization's and the public interest." Well Cousin, I hope that this explains Public Relations for you and now you will have a better idea of what I plan to do with my life.

Practice News Story 11: Accident

TREMONTON, Utah- A Utah State University van rolled on Interstate 84, west of Tremonton on Wednesday afternoon. Ten USU students and one instructor were involved. High speed and vehicle malfunction probably contributed to the crash. Four survivors were transported to nearby hospitals.
The group was on their way home from an Agricultural Systems Department field trip to kick off Ag Week. Evan Parker was the driver of the vehicle that crashed. Kyle Holden manages the farm implement store that the group had just visited and was driving next to the van at the time of the accident.
Holden reported that the tire blew and the vehicle was simply too big for Parker to gain control. The vehicle rolled, and bodies flew into the air. “I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life,” Holden said. Jennie Smith and Holden witnessed the accident. Smith helped the emergency people by doing anything they told her.
Police Lieutenant Ed Michaud was the first law enforcement officer on the scene with his partner Jason Jensen. “It appears that a van filled with young men mostly in their 20’s lost control and rolled off the interstate … and it looks like no one was wearing seatbelts,” said Michaud. Seven people are confirmed dead.
Guy Westoff, the Supervisor of USU motor vehicles told us that the vehicle would not have been on a trip if it hadn’t of passed the inspection. “It was a tragedy for our institution,” said USU President, Stan Albrecht.
